Get to Know Jim Smith!

If you listen in the mornings than Jim Smith is probably already your friend. His warmth, encouragement, and love for the Lord are sure to help you start your day off right. But here’s your chance to get to know him a better. Here’s Jim with a bit of his story:

“For almost as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated with radio and how it all works.  As a kid, I loved tuning-in different AM stations on my portable transistor radio. I can also recall being about 10 years old and riding in the car with my Dad, and asking him: “Dad, if we get to listen to the radio for free, do the people we listen to on the radio get paid for working there?”  (And at that young age, I was introduced to the concept of paid advertising.)

I majored in broadcasting at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where I was fortunate enough to be chosen as the play-by-play announcer for their Division 1 football and basketball programs, which meant that as a 20-year-old, I was able to travel the country with the teams.  It was a great experience, and I think it was then that I caught the “radio bug”, and started wondering: “Could I maybe do this radio thing for a living?”

And now, all these years later, I’m humbled and privileged to be able to host the morning show here on Family Radio, and to be able to share with you each day the greatest news the world has ever received: that you and I can have a personal relationship with the God of the universe, and with his son, Jesus, who said: “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.  I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:10-11)

I often say to my wife, Susan, that she and I are blessed beyond measure, and being able to share with you each morning here on Family Radio, is a big part of that blessing.”

  5. Hi, Jim! I hear your voice every morning, but it’s great to actually see you! I have listened for over 50 years (I’m 80) and over the years the morning person has changed, but they’re always wonderful, and Jim is one of the best! His warm personality, humor, and great love of God come over the airwaves (I listen on my phone app as I am in Naples–a snowbird). I love when he tells us some great truth his pastor has told him on Sunday! And his stories are great. Keep up the great work the Lord has given you, Jim! We love you!

  6. I’m retired, so I listen to you every morning as I prepare my breakfast, do the dishes & putts around the kitchen. 😊 I enjoy the Bible qiuz questions, & sometimes I even get 1 or 2 right.
I enjoy the stories you tell & your encouraging comments. Thank you. Marybeth from Milwaukee, WI

  7. Jim
Thank you for being there. What a great way to start my day. I retired 4 years ago from the shipyard after 42 and a half years. I listened to family radio beginning in 1983 with the “morning clock”. God has used you and this station to lead me on my faith journey. Im not perfect but I am not where i used to be Loosely translated from what i heard you say this morning. I hope it can be described of me. Les Rovang

  8. I have listened to Family Radio, virtually exclusively, since first getting saved in 1970–over 50 years ago! It ministers to me daily and I go to bed each night and throughout the night listening to Family Radio. I remember former announcers Omar Andeel in the morning and Jerry Edinger late night just to name two. I miss the fog horn and “taxi” at the intro to “The Night Hours.” but realize change is inevitable. I been a supporter for years. Family Radio is the best!!! There would be a great void in my life without Family Radio. God bless you all!

    1. Hello Ken, After searching earnestly, I came across your post referring to the old days of Family Radio and some of its programming that I look back on fondly as well. I so enjoyed Omar Andeel and other programs. What I wouldn’t give to hear some of The programming from the old days. But as you said times change. Just wanted to let you know that I too look back with fondness to the old broadcast days at family radio. God Bless.

  9. Before I drink my Coffee, I must listen to the golden spiritual voice of Jim, when the jingle for the three Bible questions comes on, this tells me if I will be late or early for my job as a History Teacher at a local high school. God has truly gifted you, Jim, with a. gift to communicate God’s truths to your listeners.May God bess you and may heaven smile upon you.

  10. Hi Jim !
Thank you so much for the quizzes.l try my best to listen to both round every morning before work, they really help me to challenge myself about the knowledge of the Bible.

I didn’t know about Family Radio until 2012 , I use to work overnight and my friend who used to give me a ride to and from work, would listen to FR every morning on our way home, since then I’ve been listening to Family Radio non stop.

  11. Hi Jim- I enjoy listening to you in the morning. I can gauge my schedule on whether it is the first round or second round of quizzes. The hymn selection is great to get me started every day and the encouraging stories get me motivated. You seem like a natural. God bless you and keep it up!!

  12. I just gave $100 for the spring drive because you are kind enough to ride with me to work every day. You’re worth more than that, but you are being recognized for your efforts to be an encouragement to me. Thanks!

    1. Thank you Cindy! I work at Family Radio, and I can tell you Jim is so blessed to be part of your day and serve God by blessing listeners like you. Thank you again for your support!

  13. I am grateful for the time we had Jim in the morning slot. I too will miss round two of the bible quiz, as I always felt there should be a round three and four also! Hope you are well Jim, and thank you for being that gentle morning voice spreading a good Christian message.

  14. Dear Jim , how could you leave , without ,even goodbye, we all wonder if you ate o.k. ,if you died, are you sick ? Are you coming back ? We miss you.

    1. Hy Melynda, Jim actually retired from working in radio to pursue other career opportunities God has brought his way. We miss him too! But we understand you have to go where God leads you!

  15. This 82 y.o. misses Jim so much. He felt like a family member. So sorry he’s not on air anymore. The listeners really should have been prepared for such a loss.

  16. I too am so disappointed to not wake up to Jim Smith and his morning quizzes. The show is definitely not the same.

  17. Thank you for your faithful service. I love the Bible quiz, and wish we had more of them. My husband and I woke every morning to your voice. He’s home with Jesus now. It has been sweet memories to hear you in the mornings. May God’s blessings be upon you in your new service for Him! Miss you!

  18. Have been a Christian for almost 40 years… it has gotten more and more challenging to work in the business world… especially since COVID and the political atmosphere. Have beenrenewed listening to Jim’s voice share spirit filled messages of encouragement on the morning show.God bless you brother whereever he leads you. I miss you.

  19. We miss your personal touch and your fun ways. You spoke from the heart. Why did they change the format when you left? I like the later quiz also. I sometimes would miss the first one. Maybe they could have them on AM and PM. Lapine is tooooo serious. Anyway, now that your gone we miss you… Come back!!!

    1. Hi Mary, we miss Jim too! We had to change the format when he left because we need someone new to actually do the job. Bob Lapine is just helping out for a short time. And we are grateful for him! Without him there wouldn’t be any new Bible quizzes.

  20. WOULD YOU PLEASE SEND ME A COPY OF THE PRAYER YOU READ ON JUNE 23,2022 IN THE MORNING. IT WAS ABOUT GETTING OLDER. I WOULD LIKE A COPY FOR ME AND ALSO MAKE COPIES FOR OTHERS. I am a regular listener and I have been wondering why is another person broadcasting in the morning. Certainly, you are missed. Hoping you coming back. The public is waiting to hear from you…

  22. We love and miss you precious Jim Smith! I’ve been scrolling through comments and finally learned why we don’t get to enjoy your wonderful humble gentle personality but we are so glad you are alive and following the Lord’s leading! I have been wondering for a long time. You made our mornings so special, thank you! Lord bless you! We will see you when we get HOME! Thank you to Bob Lapine for trying! We can’t lose family radio. It’s really hard to replace someone so beloved as Jim. I have been listening since FR began so I’ve seen many changes and we will pray the Lord will work in and thru the changes for His glory!

  23. Good morning Family,

Just dropping a line to say amen to Yvonne Giordano’s comment. I too, was thrown for a loop when Jim seemed to “disappear” and am so glad to learn that all is well. For those of us who listened faithfully in the mornings it would have been nice to have regular announcements for about a week regarding the change. Grace and Peace to you all!

  24. JIM! PLEASE STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND COME BACK!!! I MISS YOU TERRIBLY! MY FAMILY MISSES YOU!!! YOU HAVE BEEN A MEMBER OF MY FAMILY AND I FEEL LIKE I HAVE LOST A LOVED ONE!

Thanks for standing in the gap Bob. You have huge shoes to fill and we appreciate you rising to the occasion. God bless you.

  25. Jim, I just wanted to send hello wishes from Russ and Teresa (your old friends from Cincinnati). We were watching our wedding engagement video (our 25th anniversary is in November of this year) and you were on there trying to announce on your morning show to help us find the recorded Reds game. Lots of wonderful memories of our times in Cincinnati. We hope you are well. Take care and God Bless, Teresa
